Save the Bees!

9 July 2015 |

On my morning commute to work I couldn’t help but notice this poster by Friends of the Earth (below). It really made me think about our bees and just how important they are to all of us and how we need to save the bees. It’s a cause we should all be involved with as the solution is so easy! The problem is not many people know that bee colonies are dwindling and just how important they really are to us. So we have taken it upon ourselves to help spread the message.

First of all why do we need bees? Well we need bees for a variety of reasons the most important one being that bees pollinate 75% of our main food crop worldwide and without bees we would have to pollinate the food by hand which is estimated to cost £1.8 billion every year. Madness considering bees love to do it for us and it’s free!

Bees are also very close to our hearts here at Candles Naturally. Without these amazing creatures we wouldn’t be able to produce our 100% beeswax candles they are beautifully smelling, and also provide a range of health benefits. (See our blog post on how it helps Hay fever symptoms http://www.candlesnaturally.co.uk/ah-choo/)

Something has to be done, and we all have the power to help! So after seeing this poster we got in contact with our ‘Bee Man’ to share with you 3 tips on how WE can help our lovely Honeybees.

Tip 1: Make sure your garden is filled with bee friendly flowers! Pictured below is Marigold, English lavender and Vervain. (Not only does this help the bees but it means your garden will look beautiful throughout summer!)

Tip 2: The most important tip is – Don’t use pesticides, fungicides and other chemical waste, these are really harmful to bees and other insects like bumblebees and butterflies. One of the main reasons as to why we have this problem in the first place.

Tip 3: If you see a bee on the floor this summer its not dead, its just resting. To help it a long mix some water and sugar on a spoon and leave it next to the bee, chances are it will give it energy to be able to fly back home!
